What is beautiful about Moroccans is their resilience. They survive on the daily facing government corruption, extremely low salaries, and strict laws that limit their freedoms. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on so many Moroccans’ livelihoods, but I know that we will find some way to survive after all this is over.

We are also quite a funny bunch and have some rather interesting, witty proverbs about life.

As a child, my parents would regularly share these proverbs with me, but I never understood their true meaning until they actually started to apply to my life.

Living in Morocco for almost 2 decades has transformed the way I deal with obstacles that come my way and these proverbs have definitely played a huge role on my journey towards building resilience.

“Waking Up Early Is Bought With Gold.”

My father, who has woken up at 4 AM every day for decades, has repeated this proverb to me too many times to count, but it’s true.

Having an early start is extremely valuable. We all have 24 hours in a day. Some of us spend it getting a lot done, while others complain about how little time they have.
