Hey Emily. I am so sorry to hear about the trauma you have experienced.

Rape is an abhorrent crime that many women in my native country of Morocco have been subjected to and, due to the patriarchal nature of our government, perpetrators are rarely punished, which adds to the trauma.

In fact, due to how traditional Moroccan culture is, rape victims are even blamed for what happened to them, which is something I vehemently fight against.

However, this piece has nothing to do with rape or sexual abuse. I was writing from my experience of feeling emotionally triggered in different situations.

I also never claim to be an expert on trauma. I note at the end of my piece the following:

"Note: The above advice has helped me, but it may not work for you. If you require mental health support, please seek the help of a licensed medical professional."

I wish you immense healing and peace in this difficult time.
