Dear Eida,

I’m glad we at least know your name and your story. Please know that you did not die in vain. They have not succeeded in erasing you. They have failed.

You are beautiful and powerful beyond measure. We will remember your name. I will remember your name.

I hope you are at peace. At least you can’t be starved and beaten any longer. I hope you are somewhere better.

At least I hope you aren’t experiencing any pain anymore. I stand with you. I support you.

I know that you just wanted to live happily, to make your own life choices, just like every woman across the Middle East and North Africa, like every woman on this planet.

I know you’re gone and that there’s nothing I can do to help you. Even writing this feels useless, but I’m doing it anyway. I just want you to know that I care for you and I wish, with all my heart, that this hadn’t happened to you.

I will tell my daughter your story. I will also tell her about Amina and Samia and Badour and as many women as I can find whose stories desperately need to be told.

I will never forget you or them. I will shout your names from the highest hill and curse your murderers every…
